Types of Solar Incentives
Solar incentives come in many forms. Understanding each type helps you maximize your savings.
The Most Important Incentive: Federal ITC
The 30% federal Investment Tax Credit applies to ALL US homeowners regardless of state. It's the largest single solar incentive available.
Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC)
Tax CreditThe federal solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) lets you deduct 30% of the cost of installing a solar energy system from your federal taxes. The credit applies to both residential and commercial systems, and there is no cap on its value.
Rate / Amount
30% of system cost
Valid Through
2032
Example
A $20,000 solar system qualifies for a $6,000 federal tax credit, reducing your net cost to $14,000.
Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs)
SRECSRECs are tradeable certificates that represent the environmental benefit of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of solar electricity generation. In SREC-eligible states, utilities must buy a portion of their electricity from renewable sources and purchase SRECs to prove compliance.
Rate / Amount
Varies by state market ($10–$300/SREC)
Valid Through
Ongoing (while state programs exist)
Example
A 5 kW system in NJ generating ~6 MWh/year earns ~6 SRECs worth $60–$180 annually.
Net Metering
Net MeteringNet metering is a billing arrangement that allows solar homeowners to send excess electricity to the grid in exchange for credits on their utility bill. When your solar panels produce more electricity than you use, the surplus goes to the grid, and when you need more than you produce, you draw from the grid.
Rate / Amount
Credits at retail electricity rate (varies: $0.08–$0.35/kWh)
Valid Through
Policy varies by state
Example
A homeowner exporting 200 kWh/month at $0.15/kWh earns $30/month in credits — $360/year.
Utility Rebates
RebateMany electric utilities offer cash rebates to customers who install solar energy systems. These programs help utilities meet renewable energy goals and reduce peak demand. Rebates are typically offered per watt of installed capacity or as a flat dollar amount.
Rate / Amount
$0.10–$0.50/watt or $500–$3,000 flat
Valid Through
Varies by program (often annual budget caps)
Example
Xcel Energy offers $0.30/watt for a 5 kW system = $1,500 rebate, reducing net cost before federal ITC.
Property Tax Exemption
Property TaxMany states exempt the added value of a solar energy system from property tax assessments. Without this exemption, installing solar could increase your property taxes because it raises your home's assessed value.
Rate / Amount
Savings depend on local tax rate and system value
Valid Through
Permanent law in most states
Example
A $20,000 solar system in a state with 1.2% property tax saves $240/year in property taxes.
Sales Tax Exemption
Sales TaxSome states exempt solar equipment from state sales tax. This provides an immediate upfront discount on the purchase price of solar panels, inverters, and related equipment.
Rate / Amount
Varies by state sales tax rate (typically 4–8% of equipment cost)
Valid Through
Permanent law in most states
Example
A $15,000 system in a state with 6% sales tax saves $900 with the sales tax exemption.
